Another session from Boston. Veronica, her partner Matt, his twin daughters, and their new baby. I slept at their house, and we started shooting first thing in the morning when baby Maya woke up.

They have a great new (to them) house out in Concord, and a garden where they grow lots of stuff. Matt is a chef, and Veronica also loves to cook, and they were having a barbecue later in the afternoon with friends, so they spent the morning prepping for the party.

Boulder farm dinner

A few photos from a farm dinner we attended Saturday night. It was as amazing as I had anticipated.

Several places around here do these, but this is the one that I’ve heard the most about. They go to a few different farms throughout the summer, and do about two dinners a week. They seat 40 people at the table, plus the farmers. They plan the menus around what’s best that week, so you don’t know ahead of time what it will be. They do schedule certain dates to be vegetarian, so we were able to choose one of those.

The farm itself was just a little bit east of Boulder. I love that there’s this much land and open space and places with this country feeling so close to town.

When we arrived, we were served Bloody Marys that were so fresh they were like drinking a (spicy) tomato garden. Someone else was passing trays of fried squash blossoms.

I am going to have to refrain from overusing the word “amazing” with each dish, because all of it was. So just imagine me raving with every photo of food.

They cook in a school bus that’s been converted to a kitchen.

The farmers took us on a short tour of some of the fields and talked about what they grow and how they rotate the crops and when they plant and anything else people wanted to know.

They cover the crops to keep out bugs.

First course was canteloupe with chevre and roasted peppers.

Second course was gazpacho. Beautiful gazpacho.

Right as the soup course came to an end, it started to sprinkle lightly, which resulted in a rainbow. It was actually a double rainbow but I didn’t back up far enough to get the second one.

The guests stood under the trees for a few minutes while the rain passed over us. It was a nice chance to stretch our legs and move around a little bit between courses. Well played, nature.

The chef was from Italy, and here he was watching over the paellas as they cooked.

You buy the wine for your dinner directly from the Boulder Wine Merchant. After the menu is planned on Tuesday, the Boulder Wine Merchant selects wines to pair with the meal, and they send out an email to the guests with the options. There were three or four each of reds and whites, a couple of roses, a sparkling, and a beer. They deliver your wine right to the farm, and the servers bring it to you at the table. I bought just one bottle, but we could’ve done with two. As it was, the people we were sitting next to had ordered a few bottles so they shared some of theirs with us after we finished ours.

Dessert was poached plums in some kind of sauce, which I didn’t get a photo of. We stayed until well after sunset.

Amazing meal, amazing night.
