life is going on without me

The week before last, Lyle and I took a trip out to San Diego to visit friends there. It was our first time back since we moved away last summer, and it was bittersweet. Several things had changed–one of my favorite restaurants was no longer there, kids are all older, there are lots of new babies–and it made me kind of sad to see that everything’s still going on there without me around to be a part of it.

I did, however, manage to bring back some things to help remind me of that place…namely as many Trader Joe’s Indian dinners as I could fit in my suitcase. I used to eat these at least 3 times a week for lunch. Why are there no Trader Joe’s in Houston???

These two spent a lot of time playing “mail,” putting toys and other objects back and forth through the mail slot in the wall.

manhattan family

They live in New York on the Upper West Side, a block from Central Park. The kids were a little shy at first but still came running down the hallway of their building to meet me as I came off the elevator, which was awesome. I shot a few photos in their apartment, and then as their mom encouraged them to get ready to go outside to do more photos, the little girl said, “But, Mom, she just took, like, FIVE pictures of me. Isn’t that enough?”

father’s day surprise

Their mom hired me to do photos of the kids as a Father’s Day gift for her husband. I love this idea! We did the pictures on the day he left town on business. Here are a few of my favorites.

weekend in ny

People! How come I am SO BAD at updating this blog?? I hate that I am behind on posting session images. I know several photographers who post “sneak peeks” of pics the same day as they shoot the session. I wish this were me, but I have not managed it yet. (Or gotten anywhere close, really.) So…some more session images coming soon.

In the meantime, I managed to get away to New York City last weekend to visit some friends. I had so much fun, even though my feet were killing me because I stupidly chose to bring just one single pair of shoes–NEW shoes that I’d just bought earlier that week. Not smart!

early mother’s day

On Thursday, Lyle came home from preschool with a present for me. He was very excited to give it to me. It was wrapped in pink and purple tissue paper and had a heart-shaped note attached. The note had his handprints on it and a note that said, “Happy Mother’s Day, Love, Lyle.”

“Open it! Open it!” he kept telling me. I told him we should wait until Mother’s Day, which wasn’t until Sunday. “It’s Sunday now!” he said. “It’s Sunday! Open it!” It’s hard to argue with logic like that, so I opened it.

I don’t think he understands the concept of giving a gift. He kept insisting he wanted to play with it, and I told him it was his gift to me and I wanted to set it in the window. He said, “It’s my gift! My gift! I play with it!” It’s still in the kitchen window, for now.

Happy Mother’s Day, a little bit early, to all of you!
