it’s SuperMom!

I shot my first maternity session using my rented 12-24mm lens in Portland. I did a few with the 85mm, too, which is my favorite lens for shooting people usually. The first few images I took weren’t coming out as relaxed and natural as I wanted them to, so we decided to switch tactics. Instead we did some fun and goofy shots to loosen us both up and get ideas flowing. We shot on her front porch, in her bathroom, and in her sunroom.

These aren’t really the typical maternity shots, I know, and in fact in a few you can’t even really tell she is pregnant, but I love how they came out. In the first one she looks like SuperMom, doesn’t she???

superwide

A couple weeks ago I rented a superwide angle lens–a 12-24mm f/4–to play with. That’s WIDE. I had been wanting to do some wide angle stuff, but the lenses aren’t cheap, so I figured it’d be best to play with one first before I buy. This lens was awesome. I barely took it off my camera for the entire week I had it.

I had a lot of fun playing with the distortion at the 12mm length. If you get way up close to your subject, you can get all kinds of funny distortion, like giant heads and tiny feet. Like these. I was just a few inches away from the cat, and maybe a foot away from the crying toddler.

two brothers

My best friend from childhood now lives in a city far away from me and has children of her own who I never see. In fact my trip to Portland was the first time I’d ever met her four-year-old at all. I’ve got to find a way to visit her more often, because that is just wrong. I did photograph her oldest when he was just a few months old, back when I shot film and did all my black-and-white printing in a darkroom in Boston. It was cool to see that they still had those photos hanging on their wall now, six years later.

Her boys are super cute and have tons of energy and lots of personality. There was really never a dull moment while I was there.

big announcement

I am back in town finally for a while, at least. We were gone this past week again, but this time it wasn’t a vacation. This time it was a house-hunting trip in our new city. Yes, sadly we are leaving San Diego this summer. I LOVE living here and I am going to miss SD SO much, but my husband got basically his dream job, so we’re moving…

To Houston! (Where my husband will be on the faculty at Rice University.) Which maybe does not sound that exciting compared to San Diego (I know my first thought was, Houston?!? For real???) but actually it is a pretty cool city. I think we are going to like living there. Here’s our future Rice kid (no pressure, but he *does* get free tuition if he gets accepted…)

Go Owls!

Also, I changed the layout/design of this blog again. I wanted room for the pictures to be a bit bigger, and also the old design didn’t have a link to view older posts at the bottom, which always bugs me on other blogs. Let me know if you spot any quirks while viewing.

bad blogger!

I don’t mean to neglect this blog; really, I don’t. But I’ve just been SO BUSY lately with all kinds of stuff that I haven’t had time to post about it. I’ve got about 10 things I want to post about, but I don’t have time now for any of them.

Last week I was up in Portland visiting some friends there. I had a fantastic time, and I’m headed out of town again tomorrow for another week, so I’ll probably be scarce for a few more days. Then, updates galore, I promise! With lots of cute photos, too (I just have to find time to edit them–eek!).

I’ll leave you with two photos from Portland, which was gorgeous.
